Faculty sought for new Domestic Field Studies Fellows program


Program Overview

UGA Domestic Field Study (DFS) programs integrate place-based, active, and experiential learning at relevant locations within the United States. These programs are unique in that they are based offcampus for all or a substantial portion of the course. 

 

The Office of Instruction seeks to expand the breadth of available domestic field study programs to enhance the academic experience of students across campus. During the 2023 DFS Fellows program, participants will be guided through the development, revision, and submission of relevant curricular, budgetary, and logistical components for their proposed field study program in advance of an inaugural run during academic year 2023-2024. 

 

Schedule Overview

During the three-week Fellows program, daily sessions will pair workshops to explore and implement best-practices for program budgets, courses, and logistics with structured work time for faculty to make progress developing components of their field program. Meeting times and planned topics by week are listed below.

 

Note that the DFS Fellows program is scheduled during UGA’s Summer Short Session I. We strongly discourage teaching concurrently with participation in the DFS Fellows program.

 

Week One: June 13 – 16, 2023

Tuesday – Friday  9:00am – 12:00 pm

Welcome & Overview of DFS Planning Considerations 

-        Panel discussion with current program directors

-        Starting your new program proposal & field component plans -             Risk management

-        Program applications & student recruitment

Week Two: June 20 -23, 2023

Tuesday – Friday  9:00am – 12:00 pm

Aligning Instruction with Field Experiences

-        Course registration & curriculum systems

-        Active learning integration

-        Experiential Learning approvals

-        Assessment

Week Three: June 27 – 30, 2023

Tuesday – Friday  9:00am – 12:00 pm

Developing Budgets and Logistical Plans

-        Understanding student costs & scholarships 

-        Budget creation, expense forecasting and tracking

-        Logistical considerations & policy compliance for booking travel -             Fellows program wrap-up

 

Expectations

Each Domestic Field Study Fellows program participant will be expected to: 

  • Attend and engage in all scheduled face-to-face sessions
  • Complete and submit preliminary DFS program materials (curriculum, budget, and logistics) at the conclusion of the Fellows program
  • Work with DFS personnel to revise and update program materials as needed in advance of the program
  • Follow through with the inaugural program run, from application setup and student recruitment through post-program budget close-out, during the 2023-2024 academic year.

 

In return, you’ll receive one-on-one support for program development and implementation, and $7,500 in funds (eligible for use as summer salary and/or operating expenses).
